Lake Norman is the largest man-made lake in North Carolina, and is located just 18 miles northwest of Charlotte, in the northern part of Mecklenburg County. Beginning September 28, 1959, Lake Norman took four years to finish the dam and an additional two years to fill the lake. Flotilla 26-01 responds and patrols over 32,500 acres of water and 520 miles of beautiful shoreline. Lake Norman is 34 miles long and eight miles across at the widest point and descending over 130 feet deep. The Lake Norman area spans across several small towns and communities surrounding the lake including the Lake Norman State Park in the most northern part of the lake.
